Howie's Sports Bar and Grill was established in 1986 by Howie Zimmer. The building, however, has been in St. Cloud for decades and has been several different establishments throughout the years. It originated as a horse stable, and if you look closely (or get Howie to show you,) you can still see some remnants of the former facility!
In 1980, Howie Zimmer purchased the "1929 Club" located at 101 9th Avenue North, St. Cloud, from Fred and Louise Greenfield. It was then originally called "Howie Zimmer's "1929" Club." For about a year and a half, it continued to provide "Olde Tyme" music five nights a week. In mid 1982, the name was changed to "Zim's on 9th" and then "Howie's Sports Lounge." At this time there was no kitchen.
Several months later it was sold to Elmer Kruchten and Randy Pang, and was called the "Courthouse Pub." After a year and a half, Howie took over ownership again. The name was then changed to "Howie's Sports Bar and Grill," and the kitchen was opened, offering lunch and dinner. Many TVs and our big screen TV was added along with a DJ system and dance floor. Stephen "Spanky" Kremer came on board as the Manager in 1986 and is still ticking - wow!
Since the addition of the TVs and sound system, we have been noted as a friendly, regular kind of place where friends can meet and socialize during sports events, notably Twins, Wild, Timberwolves and Vikings games. We have a shuttle bus that runs to and from all home SCSU Men's Hockey games. We also have our annual golf tournament, which we've been running since 1986, that includes as many as 150 participants each year!
Howie's Sports Bar and Grill is a proud member of the Minnesota Licensed Beverage Association (with Howie serving on the Board of Directors), the St. Cloud Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Council, and the St. Cloud Hospitality Association (with Spanky currently serving as President).
